"Inside Mum - A thematic exploration of public attitudes towards women offenders being offered parenting education"

Coventry University (School of Psychology, Social and Behavioural Sciences)

Purpose of the Study - Public attitudes have been identified as a concern in terms of confidence in the criminal justice system, and particularly so in relation to sentencing policy and practice. Recent studies on women offenders have evidenced that such views are conflicting. The purpose of this study was to explore such views in relation to parenting education, rehabilitation, and outcomes for children.

“The only way to break the cycle of re-offending, and to enable women to change their futures (and those of their children) is to empower them to make changes, to improve their situation”

The Research Questions that I explored in this empirical study:

RQ1 - How do the public view female offenders being offered parenting education to support outcomes?

RQ2 - How do the public view the role of Forensic Mental Health practitioners in parenting education and support?

This was undertaken through a semi structured question schedule (Qualitative thematic analysis).

My main thematic findings against these questions were:

  • 'gender differentiation versus equality'

  • 'protecting not punishing'

  • 'prison as trauma'

  • and

  • 'the importance of the role of the practitioner'
